Taking Vows
Some couples would like to just say, I do! And be done. Some couples want to speak
loving words to each other. Some couples would prefer not to speak at all.
Taking vows in most wedding ceremonies includes three sets of vows. The personal
vows that the Bride and Groom speak to each other denote their devotion to one
another. The formal vows of “I do’” where the Bride and Groom state their
commitment to each other. The vows said during the ring exchange as the Bride and
Groom give each other their first gifts as Husband and Wife.
So what makes a vow meaningful? What makes a vow personal? How can the vows
you take be expressed in a timeless way? Vows speak to the vision of a marriage; they
reach beyond the here and now, far beyond the past and into the hereafter. Wow, no
wonder we feel a bit shaken by the very thought of taking vows.
Many couples today want to express their devotion to one another through personal
vows during their wedding ceremony. Most have never taken vows before, so how do
they start this process of writing and speaking personal vows to each other.
You can always use the services of a gifted wedding officiant that writes personal vows
as part of your ceremony. Or you can begin the process one word at a time. Words
like; commit, devote, declare, intention, share, love, respect, encourage, fulfill,
partner, beloved. Write your beloved a sentence that uses each one of these words and
start from there and then rewrite it until it feels heartfelt and beyond into the future of
your shared destiny.
Now you have formed a vision of what your love can grow into. Perhaps you can use
your personal vows as an anniversary tradition every year as you recommit your love
to each other and focus on your intention to be loving and respectful to one another.
Taking vows can be a meaningful enriching experience that will shine through your
marriage like a beacon. So jump in get your feet wet, the water is warm and the light in
your heart will shine on the way.
